Stone Eco

Turn to stone, shrug off the blow, and hurl the earth back at your enemies.

Stone Eco

The Stone Eco is one of the four elemental Eco powers available to Jak throughout the Jak and Daxter series, alongside Fire, Water, and Wind. First introduced in Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, it grants Jak the ability to encase himself in stone, rendering him temporarily immune to all damage, and to hurl dense stone projectiles at enemies and obstacles. As a core mechanical pillar of the trilogy, the Stone Eco serves as both a defensive tool and a puzzle-solving instrument. Its presence in every mainline title makes it a constant in Jak's arsenal, and its upgrades in Jak II and Jak 3 expand its utility into platforming and more aggressive combat applications.

Lore & Background

In the world of New Bacaria, the Ecos are ancient energies left behind by the Precursors, a civilization that vanished long before the events of the games. Each Eco embodies a fundamental force of nature, and the Stone Eco represents the enduring, unyielding quality of the earth itself. Where Fire consumes and Water flows, Stone simply endures — a fitting metaphor for the resilience Jak must summon to survive the hostile landscapes of the Sunken City and the Precursor City. The Ecos were sealed in separate vessels by the Precursors, presumably to prevent any single wielder from accumulating all four forces. Collecting them is central to Jak's journey in The Precursor Legacy, and their power is later refined and expanded in Jak II and Jak 3, where the Stone Eco gains the ability to generate solid stone platforms and larger, more destructive projectiles. Across all three games, the Eco remains a tangible link between Jak and the lost civilization whose ruins he traverses. Narratively, the Stone Eco reinforces a recurring theme: strength through stillness and patience. While the Fire Eco is explosive and the Wind Eco is free, the Stone Eco demands that Jak hold his ground, absorb the impact, and respond with measured force — a quiet counterpoint to the chaos of the world around him.

In Their Own Story

The corridor in the Sunken City was a kill-box: Hazbin soldiers flanking both sides, acid dripping from the ceiling, no cover for thirty paces. Jak felt the familiar heat of Daxter's worry in his ear. "You're gonna get melted, buddy." He didn't answer. He just let the brown light pour over him, felt the weight settle into his bones like the city itself pressing down. His skin greyed. His joints locked. A bolt struck his chest and sparked off like a pebble off a boulder. He walked through the crossfire, each impact a dull thud behind the stone, and when he reached the far door he flicked his wrist. A sphere of compressed rock tore through the air and shattered the last soldier's shield. The stone peeled away from his skin in flakes, and Daxter was already grinning. "Show-off."

Reader's Guide

The Stone Eco is acquired during the main campaign of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. Once collected, Jak can activate it at any time by pressing the designated Eco button. Mechanically, activating the Stone Eco encases Jak in a shell of grey-brown stone. While active, he takes zero damage from enemy attacks, environmental hazards, and fall damage. This makes it invaluable in corridors dense with Hazbin fire or in areas with acid pools and crumbling floors. The Eco also lets Jak throw a dense stone projectile, which can shatter breakable objects, stun enemies, and serve as a ranged attack when his melee combo is insufficient. In Jak II and Jak 3, the Stone Eco is upgraded. Jak can now generate flat stone platforms in mid-air, opening new traversal routes and puzzle solutions that were impossible in the first game. His stone projectiles are also larger and more destructive, and the invulnerability window is slightly extended. As a narrative symbol, the Stone Eco represents endurance and the weight of the Precursor legacy. It is the power that says: you do not need to be the fastest or the fiercest — you only need to hold. In a series defined by running and leaping, the Stone Eco is the moment Jak stops, and the world breaks against him instead.
