Daxter
The ottsel who talks big, fights small, and saves the day when no one's looking.
via Wikipedia: Jak and Daxter · see source
Daxter is the loudmouthed, orange-furred sidekick of the Jak and Daxter series, developed by Naughty Dog. Once a human boy, he was transformed into an ottsel—a hybrid of an otter and a weasel—early in the first game and remains stuck in that form, serving up sarcasm, cowardice, and the occasional flash of genuine bravery. He is Jak's best friend, his comic foil, and the one who never lets a life-or-death situation go by without a wisecrack.

Lore & Background
Daxter grew up in Sandover Village as Jak's partner-in-crime, a human boy with a talent for mischief and a mouth that never quit. That all changed on Misty Island, when he tumbled into a Dark Eco silo—a volatile mutagenic substance that transformed him from a human into an ottsel, a fictional hybrid of an otter and weasel. Unlike Jak, who later learned to channel Dark Eco's powers, Daxter got only the mutation, no super-strength, and a lifetime supply of indignity. But what he lost in height he made up for in resourcefulness: he scrambles through vents, squeezes into cracks, and talks his way out of (and into) trouble with equal skill.
In Their Own Story
The air in Haven City was thick with smoke and the distant clang of metal. Daxter perched on Jak's shoulder, his tail flicking nervously. 'You know, Jak, I'm all for saving the world, but couldn't we do it from a nice, air-conditioned room? Maybe with snacks?' He gestured with a tiny paw at the looming Metal Head nest ahead. 'I'm just saying, my fur is not built for this kind of stress.' Jak grunted, stepping forward, and Daxter sighed, gripping tighter. 'Fine, but if I get eaten, I'm haunting you for eternity. And I'll be a very sarcastic ghost.'
Reader's Guide
Daxter is mostly a non-playable companion, riding on Jak's shoulder through the series to deliver commentary, advance the story, and occasionally lend a paw. In Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, he can be launched from Jak's spin attack to reach high ledges or squeeze into tight spaces. In Jak II and Jak 3, he gets his own moments: a stealth mission where he infiltrates a Metal Head nest, and the spin-off title Daxter (2006), where he becomes the star, zapping bugs with a flyswatter in a bug-extermination adventure set during the two-year gap introduced in the opening of Jak II. In Daxter, he is employed as a pest exterminator by the Kridder Ridder company, working to mitigate the incoming metal bug invasion while also on a quest to find and free Jak from his imprisonment by the Krimzon Guard. As a character, Daxter is the series' comic relief, defusing tension with a well-timed one-liner or a cowardly squeak. His chatter fills the silence left by Jak's early-game stoicism, voicing the player's own frustrations and fears. In combat, he's not directly controllable (outside his own game), but his dialogue adapts to every situation—offering hints, cracking jokes, or just complaining about the smell. His agility and small size make him perfect for stealth and puzzle sections, especially in his solo outing, where he proves that even a pint-sized ottsel with a flyswatter can be a hero.
